Equipment

Find out what clothing you should wear for class. There’s also information about the safety equipment you’ll be required to use, and the school kit we have available.

New Students

School kit will be provided for you (jackets, chest protectors, gloves and masks). Students are expected to purchase their own equipment eventually, but we’ll discuss this with you when appropriate.

If you’re an established fencer and plan on bringing your own kit, please contact us first to check that it’s suitable.

Clothing

All students should wear light, comfortable clothing which they can exercise in. The school uniform typically requires plain black trousers (jogging bottoms, leggings or similar) and a plain white t-shirt. We don’t allow branded sports kit like football tops, etc. You should wear a pair of trainers that you can easily move around in (running shoes are a good choice). Please make sure that you don’t use black soled footwear however, as this isn’t permitted at our training venue.

It’s tradition that black fencing jackets are only worn by instructors, and blue socks are only worn by senior members, so please avoid wearing these colours unless you’re eligible to do so.

Safety Equipment

To fence at Black Boar, you’ll need to wear additional safety gear over your standard clothing. Some items are essential requirements for everyone, and some you can fence without but we recommended having them.

Fencing Mask

This is essential. Fencing masks are specifically designed to protect against hits to the face and head. The masks used at Black Boar must be clearly rated to CEN Level 2 and in good condition.

Fencing Jacket

This is essential. Fencing jackets are made with specific materials designed to protect against hits to the body and arms.

Chest Protector or Plastron

This is essential. Chest protectors are made from moulded plastic, and offer the most dampening against hits. Plastrons are similar, but are made from strong fabric instead of plastic, offering greater freedom of movement and comfort (but hits will be felt more keenly). Whichever option you choose is down to personal preference, they both offer additional protection that is worn under your fencing jacket.

Gloves

These are essential. Gloves provide protection for your hands and fingers, which can receive hits during fencing. Some gloves are specifically designed for fencing, but any sturdy gloves will do (leather gloves, gardening gloves, etc). Please note, knitted / thin material gloves will offer little protection and aren’t suitable for fencing.

Wrist, Elbow and Knee Pads

These are highly recommended, specifically for military sabre classes where hits to the arms and legs can occur. Whilst fencing specific pads are available on the market, cheaper options like skateboarding pads or similar are good alternatives.

Groin Guard

This is highly recommended, for both smallsword and military sabre classes. Hits to such sensitive areas of the body are uncommon, however mishaps can occur, so for your comfort and peace of mind you may want to use a guard.

Water Bottle

This isn’t mandatory, but we suggest bringing a water bottle to class. It’s always a good idea to stay hydrated, and there are water fountains throughout our training venue for refills.

Planning to Buy Equipment?

Getting your own fencing equipment is always exciting. You need to be careful though, it’s extremely important that what you acquire is fit for purpose and will keep you safe. Not all equipment on the market is suitable for historical fencing, and there’s nothing worse than spending lots of money on kit only to discover that you won’t be able to use it. Before buying any gear, speak with our Black Boar instructors first to get advice.
