Moffat Gathering
An action-packed fencing weekend in the historic Scottish Borders town of Moffat. Hosted each year, the event features workshops covering many different weapon styles, social activities, training sessions, official certification assessments and much more.
This is an invitation only event for Black Boar members, associates and special guests.
2025 Event
This year’s Moffat Gathering officially takes place from Friday 9th May to Monday 12th May 2025. There will be an additional day on Thursday 8th May exclusively for instructors / teachers.
Thursday 8th May – instructor / teacher only workshops
Friday 9th May – official arrival day with free play and socialising
Saturday 10th May – workshops, free play and socialising
Sunday 11th May – workshops, free play and socialising
Monday 12th May – departure day
All guests are welcome to arrive on Thursday 8th May if they wish, but there may be restrictions on who can participate in the instructor / teacher workshops.

If you’re not participating in the instructor / teacher activities on Thursday, you should aim to arrive at 15:00 on Friday.

Venue
The event will be held at the Well Road Centre, a Victorian residence situated just outside Moffat’s town centre.
How to Get There
There are various transport options to get to Moffat. If you’re travelling by car, the town is situated just off the A74, and there are parking spaces at the venue.
Many guests travel by bus from Edinburgh’s city centre. The 101A service departs from the Edinburgh Bus Station and times are available on the official SPT schedule.
If you prefer to come by train, services go from Edinburgh Waverley to Lockerbie, with onward travel bus connections to Moffat. Whatever method you use, you should check the most up to date timetable information and plan your outward and return journey carefully.

Sleeping Arrangements
The venue has shared bedroom facilities. Participants will be assigned a room on arrival and may be sharing with others. Beds, mattresses and pillows are provided, but everyone will need to bring their own sleeping bag or duvet and a pillowcase.
Bathrooms, Kitchen and Common Areas
There are several shared bathroom and shower facilities throughout the venue, a shared kitchen area with fridges and cupboard storage space, an exercise hall and multiple shared communal areas for socialising.
Eating Arrangements
Whilst not a fully catered event, limited meals are provided. This will include some breakfast items, lunch snacks and dinner on certain evenings. Participants should be prepared to purchase / cook their own meals as needed, and must supply their own drinks and snacks.
Local Amenities
If you need to pick up any supplies during the event, Moffat features several convenience stores and a Co-op supermarket. There’s also various restaurants (including takeout), cafes and bars if you plan to explore the town.

Fencing Gear
Participants must bring their own fencing gear. This includes appropriate safety equipment (fencing mask, jacket, gloves, etc) and blunt training weapons (smallsword and sabre simulators). Limited school kit is available to borrow on a first come first served basis.

Bedding
Participants must bring their own bedding (sleeping bag or duvet and a pillowcase) as these are not provided at the venue.
Food and Drink
Participants must bring their own drinks and snacks. As there are limited meals offered during the event, everyone will be expected to procure their own additional food and supplies as needed.
General Items
Participants should bring any general supplies that they’ll need throughout the event. This should include a towel, extra clothing, toiletries and hygiene products, phone charger, etc.
Booking and Payment
Entry to the 2025 Moffat Gathering is by invitation only, and tickets cost £130 per person. All guests have been contacted by email with event details, including payment instructions. If you were expecting to receive an invitation but can’t find our email, remember to check your junk / spam folder.
